The Party by Robyn Harding

The Party by Robyn Harding (back cover)

So I just finished reading Robyn Harding’s The Party, and I can’t say enough good things about this book!

It’s pretty rare for me to pick 2 winners in a row (in case you missed my latest post, the last book I read also won my stamp of approval).  I’m really pleased with my luck lately and I hope it continues.

A Little Bit About The Plot

The story begins at Hannah Sanders’s 16th birthday party.  Hannah—a pretty well-behaved kid with strict, wealthy parents—has recently been crowned one of the popular kids at school, and worries her childish slumber party will make the wrong impression on her new, cooler friends.

As you might’ve guessed, Hannah makes sure to smuggle some alcohol into her party— but her friends also come prepared with extra booze and drugs of their own.

Of course, one thing leads to another, and Hannah’s party quickly escalates into a tragedy that changes one girl’s life forever— but not without leading to an inevitable fallout between Hannah, her friends, and, of course, the girls’ parents.

As the story develops, we learn more about each separate character’s complex personality, and find out just how shallow some people really are.

My Thoughts And Rating

This book had me hooked right from the start— I don’t get to say this as often as I’d like to, but the author really knows how to write, and deserves a lot more recognition than I suspect she’s actually had.

One of my biggest pet peeves as a reader is seeing an author who fails to develop unique character personalities and, as a result, ends up writing incredibly unrealistic, downright silly dialogue.  Robyn Harding is absolutely not one of those authors.

From the very first page of the book, it’s clear that every single character in The Party has been carefully thought-out and possesses a truly individual set of characteristics—and that’s what makes this story so compelling.

This book was a light, easy read that I quickly devoured, and I definitely see myself reading more from Robyn Harding in the future.

The Verdict

As for my rating, I gave The Party 4 out of 5 stars on Goodreads; I enjoyed it that much.
